This guide applies to websites hosted on a cPanel hosting account. Shopify and BigCommerce stores use their own platform workflows rather than uploading a complete website into cPanel.
Website files belong in the document root assigned to the domain. The main domain often uses public_html, but additional domains or particular website setups may use a different folder. Check the domain’s document root in cPanel before uploading.
Use cPanel File Manager over a secure connection, or the secure file-transfer method and account details supplied for your hosting service. Do not assume every account supports the same transfer method, hostname or credentials.
Uploading or replacing files can affect the live website. Take an appropriate backup and confirm the intended destination and release process before overwriting existing files. A WordPress website may also depend on its database and configuration; copying files alone is not a complete migration.
